US Report On Pakistan Situation: Corruption, Discrimination, Culture Of Impunity

WASHINGTON: A US report said on Friday that Pakistan had a “culture of impunity” on human rights abuses and stated that security forces were operating outside the control of the civilian government. An annual State Department survey on human rights reported widespread concerns in Pakistan including violence against women, child labour, corruption and discrimination against religious minorities.

ISLAMABAD: The government has been caught red-handed protecting the rich and punishing the poor in what appears to be a huge under the table deal, as the 15 percent flood tax, imposed through a presidential ordinance, has only been imposed on common taxpayers and big businesses have been exempted, costing a hefty Rs10 billion loss to the exchequer.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MNA Anjum Aqeel has agreed to hand over land and cash worth Rs7 billion to the treasury under a deal struck with federal investigators to resolve the National Police Foundation (NPF) scandal.

The minister for trade amassed as much as Rs500m in the scam.

KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has established that certain influential political people benefited from illegal National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) land deals and officers of the NICL and others acted as front men for various state dignitaries, including the federal trade minister, Makhdoom Amin Faheem.
